Today we are sharing another recent hair retouching project created for an AHFA 2026 finalist collection.
This six-image series has a darker and more intense character than the previous collections featured on the blog. Strong colour, graphic styling and custom backgrounds give the images a tense, vivid atmosphere.
The backgrounds do more than fill the space behind the models. They help define the mood of the entire collection.
Building a Complete Visual Environment
Custom background work needs to feel like part of the original photograph.
Colour, contrast, lighting and texture all have to support the subject. If the background feels disconnected, even technically polished retouching can look artificial.
For this collection, the post-production process involved balancing the models, hair and finished backgrounds as one complete image. The darker environment needed enough depth to feel rich without losing important detail.
At the same time, the brighter colours had to remain vibrant without overwhelming the styling.
Separating Hair From a Complex Background
Hair retouching becomes more demanding when the background contains strong colour, texture or contrast.
Fine strands can disappear into darker areas. Bright edges can look unnaturally sharp. Reflected colour can also affect the skin and hair in ways that need careful control.
The aim is not to isolate every strand perfectly. That often makes hair look cut out or overly processed. Instead, the edges need to feel natural while the overall shape remains clear.
Careful masking, tonal adjustments and local contrast help preserve that balance.
Retouching With Mood in Mind
This collection was never intended to feel soft or neutral.
Its strength comes from tension, colour and a slightly harder visual language. The retouching therefore needed to support that atmosphere rather than soften it away.
Skin still required a polished and consistent finish, but not at the expense of character. Hair texture needed refinement, while retaining enough irregularity to feel real. The backgrounds needed control, but they could not become flat or sterile.
Every technical decision had to serve the mood of the finished series.
Competition Hair Photography Post-Production
Award-focused hair imagery needs more than individual polished photographs. The full collection must feel connected.
Across all six images, we balanced colour, contrast, skin finish and background treatment to create a consistent visual identity. Each frame remains distinct, but all six belong to the same world.
This AHFA 2026 finalist collection is another example of the specialist hair retouching, beauty retouching and custom background work handled by the studio.
