Our Hair Retouching Studio: Award-Level Retouching Since 2017

This vibrant, dreamlike series is the latest award-finalist collection we are adding to the hair retouching studio portfolio.

Created for the 2026 Australian Hair Industry Awards – Creative, the six-image collection combines saturated colour, movement, softness and deliberate blur. Each image feels slightly otherworldly. The visual language changes across the series, but the collection still holds together as one complete body of work.

It is also a good example of the kind of project our studio has specialised in since 2017.

Specialist Hair Retouching Since 2017

Our studio has worked at the highest level of professional hair and beauty retouching for nearly a decade.

Since 2017, we have retouched countless images for hairdressers, photographers, salons, editorial teams and creative professionals around the world. Many of those images were created for major hairdressing competitions, industry awards, editorial submissions and professional portfolios.

Some collections became finalists. Some went on to win awards. Many were published, promoted and shared across the hair industry.

A large part of that work never appears on our own website or social media. Clients often keep competition imagery private until entries close, finalists are announced or campaigns are released. In many cases, the finished work belongs publicly to the wider creative team.

Behind the scenes, however, specialist hair retouching remains the studio’s core work.

Every Image Is Retouched Individually

We do not use a fixed formula for every image.

Each collection has its own visual direction. Each photograph has its own strengths, technical issues and creative purpose. For that reason, every image is retouched manually and approached as an individual piece of work.

Our process begins with the hair shape, texture, flyaways, shine, colour and movement. Skin, styling, background, composition and overall balance also need careful attention. Finally, we consider how each photograph relates to the rest of the collection.

The process is detailed, but it is never mechanical.

One image may need precise edge work and controlled hair texture. Another may depend on subtle skin transitions, background reconstruction or complex colour adjustments. Some collections need a clean and restrained finish. Others need something more atmospheric, graphic or experimental.

Our role is not simply to remove imperfections. It is to understand what the image is trying to become.

A Retouching Process Built Around the Collection

Competition hair photography rarely succeeds as a group of unrelated images.

The full collection needs rhythm. Colour, contrast and finish must feel connected, while each photograph still needs enough individuality to remain interesting.

That is especially important in this AHIA 2026 finalist series.

The images use vivid colour, soft focus, blur and movement in different ways. A rigid retouching style would have weakened that variety. Instead, each frame required its own treatment while remaining part of the same visual world.

Hair detail was refined where clarity mattered, while softness remained intact wherever blur formed part of the concept. Careful control of skin tone and colour preserved the vibrant palette without flattening it. The final balancing work helped the series feel intentional rather than inconsistent.

This is where experience becomes important.

Good retouching is not only about knowing how to make a technical adjustment. It is about knowing whether that adjustment should be made at all.

Experience That Supports the Creative Team

After years of working with hair photography, we bring more than software knowledge to a project.

Our experience spans hundreds of collections, countless individual images and many different competition standards. Over the years, we have learned how hair behaves under studio lighting, how colour grading affects skin and texture, and how easily excessive retouching can damage the styling. Throughout the process, the hair must remain the focus.

Our job is to support the photographer, hairdresser and wider creative direction. The final image should feel polished and complete, but it should not lose the character that made it worth photographing in the first place.

Clients come to us for careful execution, but also for judgement. They value an experienced second pair of eyes and a retouching process shaped around the needs of the image.

Professional Hair Retouching That Continues to Evolve

Every year, the studio handles more ambitious work.

The collections become more complex. The visual ideas become bolder. The standards continue to rise.

Our process evolves with them.

We continue to refine the way we approach hair texture, colour, skin, backgrounds and collection consistency. We also continue to build on nearly a decade of specialist experience.

The tools may change, but the principles remain the same: manual work, close attention to detail, clear communication and respect for the original creative idea.

A Vibrant AHIA 2026 Finalist Collection

This collection is a fitting final entry in our recent series of Australian hair awards projects.

It is colourful, unusual and visually confident. The mixture of softness, blur and saturated colour gives every image its own identity, while the full set remains cohesive.

For us, it also represents what professional hair retouching should be.

The finished work is polished, but not sterile. Detailed, but not overworked. Consistent, but not repetitive.

That balance has shaped our studio since 2017, and it remains at the centre of every collection we retouch.
